VOIP Server / PBX |
Asterisk is software that turns an ordinary computer into a Voice Communications Server. It is the world's most powerful and popular telephone exchange. It is used by small businesses, large businesses, call centers, carriers and governments worldwide. Like any PBX, it allows connected telephones to make calls to one another, and to connect to other telephone services including the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. Asterisk does voice over IP in many protocols, and can interoperate with almost all standard based telephony equipment using inexpensive hardware. It includes high-end features such as interactive voice response, voice mail, conference calling, and automatic call distribution and routing that have until now only been available on proprietary PBX systems. The cost factor is one obvious reason for using an Asterisk PBX rather than a proprietary one. But there are other reasons as well. Users can forward incoming calls to external numbers and have incoming calls automatically sent as media files via Email, without having to ask an administrator to set up their phones to perform those tasks.
